High in the Outeniqua Mountains close to George in the Garden Route, Western Cape, lies a hidden valley called the “Waboomskraal” valley. Referred to as the “Kraal” by the locals, the valley is rich in fertile soil, blessed with abundant water resources, and has a unique Mediterranean climate not found elsewhere in Africa. This is where some of the best Hops is grown in the world, sought after by beer makers across the globe. The community of the Waboomskraal is an old one, the valley constantly inhabited by people since time immemorial. The farmers and their families toiling the rich farmland today recognize the beauty of their land and strive to live in harmony with mother nature, balancing agricultural activity with the preservation of the valley’s natural fauna and flora.

Hops farming, walking and biking trails, water activities and a full-service spa are all quietly on offer for the discerning visitor. Air-conditioned rooms with fast wifi are complimented by old-school formal gardens, friendly staff and an unhurried and leisurely approach to your stay. Kouwdouw has many things of interest; one of the largest Truffle forests in South Africa, the rare giant Chianina cattle breed, towering mountains and the occasional Cape Mountain Leopard visitor.
